Install
Design Editor runs on macOS, Windows and Linux. It is a single download with no account and no cloud.
1Download the build for your system
Every version is on the Releases page. The site picks the right file for your computer; the table below names each one.
| System | File |
|---|---|
| macOS, Apple silicon | Design-Editor-<version>-arm64-mac.dmg |
| Windows, 64-bit | Design-Editor-<version>-x64-win-setup.exe |
| Linux, x86_64 | design-editor-linux-x86_64.tar.gz |
2macOS
- Open the
.dmgand drag Design Editor to Applications. - The build is not code-signed yet, so Gatekeeper stops the first launch. Right-click the app and choose Open, or clear the quarantine flag:
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/Design Editor.app"3Windows
- Run the
-win-setup.exeinstaller. - If SmartScreen warns about an unknown publisher, choose More info, then Run anyway.
4Linux
The archive holds a single design-editor binary. Unpack it into a folder you can write to so the in-app update can replace it in place.
tar xzf design-editor-linux-x86_64.tar.gz -C ~/.local/binIt needs glibc 2.39 or newer, GL/EGL and an X11 or Wayland session.
5Put the de command on your path
The de command line tool ships with the app. On macOS it lives inside the bundle; link it once:
sudo ln -sf "/Applications/Design Editor.app/Contents/MacOS/de" /usr/local/bin/deOn Windows the installer puts de.exe next to design-editor.exe under C:\Program Files\Design Editor but does not add it to PATH. The Releases page also has standalone CLI archives for every system.
6Updates
The app checks GitHub for a new version when it starts and offers it in Settings, System. Updating downloads the build, checks it against SHA256SUMS.txt and relaunches. You can also choose Help, Check for Updates, or turn automatic checks off in the same settings tab.
7Check the download
Each release ships a SHA256SUMS.txt. Compare it with the hash of your file:
shasum -a 256 <file>Get-FileHash <file>8Build from source
The editor is written in Rust and pins its toolchain, so a plain Cargo build is enough:
git clone --recurse-submodules https://github.com/kemalcalak/design-editor
cd design-editor
cargo build --release -p de-host-desktop -p de-cli
